Chhukha
Chukha, previously Chhukha, is one of the 20 dzongkhag (districts) comprising Bhutan. The major town is Phuentsholing which is the gateway city along the sole road which connects India to western Bhutan (cf. Lateral Road).Chukha is the commercial and the financial capital of Bhutan.With Bhutan’s oldest hydropower plant completed in 1985 and Tala Power plant, the country’s largest power plant, Chukha is the top dzongkhag which contributes the maximum to the GDP of the country.also located are the country’s oldest industries like the Bhutan Carbibe Chemical Limited(BCCL) and the Bhutan Boards Products Limited(BBPL).
Chhukha Dzongkhag was established in April 1987, coinciding with the beginning of the sixth plan. The dzongkhag has one Drungkhag and 11 geogs Viz Bhalujhora, Bongo, Bjachho, Chapchha, Darla, Dungna, Getena, Geling, Lokchina, Metakha and Phuentsholing.
Chhukha is the main entry points for import and commercial hub of the country. Major hydro power plants, which are key source of national income are also located in Chhukha dzongkhag. This comparative advantage can foster rapid economic growth of the Dzongkhag
Chhukha dzongkhag covers an area of about 1,802 sq.kilometers with elevations ranging from 200 to 3500m above sea level. Cultivatable agricultural land forms only around nine percent of the total area of the dzongkhag.
Majority of the people depend on livestock and subsistence agricultural farming. mandarin, potatoes and cardomom are the principlal cash crops in the dzongkhag. Despite favourable climatic conditions, farm productivity is low due to terrain conditions and lack of adequate farm infrastructure in particular farm roads.
The dzongkhag has 30 schools including 15 community schools with total students of 11316 in 2001. Three hospitals and eight BHUs render public health services in the dzongkhag. With 110 drinking water supply schemes, over 60 percent of the population have access to piped drinking water supply. About 500 households have access to electricity.
Phuentsholing, Darla, Bhalujhora, Chapchha and Logchina geogs have fairly good road network, electricity, telephones connection, water supply, health and education coverage with high income levels and good living conditions.Getena, Dungna, Metakha, Geling and Bongo geogs on the other hand are very remote and relatively poor. Rugged terrain and lack of motorable roads pose considerable problem in delivering developmental services to the people.
1. Bhulajhora Gewog : Bhalujhora geog has 17 villages and covers an area of 73 sq.km or 2,612.35 Acres with elevation ranging 300-1,200 meter above sea level. It is bordered by Indian State of West Bengal in the south, Darla and Geling geog in the north and Phuentsholing in the west.
2. Bjacho Gewog : Bjachho is one of the smallest geogs in the Dzongkhag and has an area of 140.6 sq.km /1,273.52 acres with altitude ranging from 1400-2400 meters above sea level. It has four villages viz. Bjachho, Tsimakha, Mebesa and Wangkha . The Dzongkhag Headquarter is located in this geog.
3. Bongo Gewog : Bongo geog has 15 villages and the biggest geog with an area of 396 sq.km /4365.83 Acres and the villages are widely scattered. It is located towards southwest headquarter and bordered by Getena geog in the east, Dala geog in the south-west and Geling geog in the west.
4. Chapcha Gewog : Chapchha geog has 11 villages and has an area of 112.6 sq.km or 2,790.83 acres. It is located in the northen most part of Dzongkhag and the Thimphu-Phuentsholing National highway passes through this geog.
5. Darla Gewog : Darla geog has 17 villages and has an area of 139.7 sq.km or 4,598.40 acres with elevation ranging from 2200 meter above sea level.
6. Gelling Gewog : Gelling geog has 11 villages and located in the centre of the Dzongkhag. It has an area of 247 sq.km/1580 acres and stretches from Wanakha in the north to Sorchen in the south. It has a border with all geogs of Chhukha except Getena.
7. Getena Gewog : Getena geog consists of seven villages and one of the remotest geog under Chhukha Dzongkhag covering an area of 214 sq.km/854.72 acres and is about 4 days walk from the motor road at Agaylakha. It is bordered by Dorona geog of Dagana Dzongkhag and Bongo geog of this Dzongkhag.
8. Lokchina Gewog : Lokchina geog is one of the remotest geogs and consists of 12 villages. It is located between Phuentsholing geog in the south east and Dungna in the north. It has an area of 70.4 sq.km/3917.77 acres and situated within the altitude ranging from 600-1200 meters above sea level.
9. Metakha Gewog : Metakha geogs consist of six villages and covers an area of 100 sq.km with elevation ranging from 1000-1200 meters above sea level.
10.Phuentsholing Gewog : Phuentsholing geog has 19 villages and covers an area of 139.8 sq.km 4860.38 acres and is sithuated in the southern part of the Dzongkhag bordered by Samtse Dzongkhag in the west, Logchina in the northwest and Geling in the north and India in the south.
