Sarpang

Bhutan Sarpang District or Dzongkhag Sarpang is one of the 20 dzongkhag (districts) comprising Bhutan.

The Sarpang Dzongkhag is situated in the central southern foothills bordering India. The area of the dzongkhag stretches from Lhamoy Zingkha in the west to Manas National Park in the east. It encompasses a total gewographical area of approximately 2288 km2 (Source- LUPP). Its topographic features have undulated terrain with an elevation ranging from 200m to 3600 m above mean sea level.

The Dzongkhag is administratively divided into two Drungkhags viz. Gelephu and Lhamoy Zingkha, and consists of 15 gewogs. Five gewogs, namely Hilley, Dekiling, Senghe, Doban and Sarpangtar are under the jurisdiction of Dzongkhag headquarter. Seven gewogs namely Gelephu, Chhuzagang, Umling, Serzhong, Taklai, Jigmechhoeling and Bhur are under Gelephu Drungkhag while Lhamoy Zingkha, Deorali and Nichula gewogs are under Lhamoy Zingkha Drungkhag. The dzongkhag has 186 villages with 4395 households.

About 12 % of the total area is under agriculture. The proportion of Chhuzhing and Kamzhing is almost equal. Some of the best potential Chhuzhings is found around Gelephu and Chhuzagang and yield per acres is high where irrigation facilities exist. Paddy, Maize, Wheat and Millet are some of the major crops. Cash crops such as orange, areca nut, cardamom, ginger, guava, lemon, banana and mango are grown extensively.

Sarpang is one of the oldest towns in the country with access to motorable roads as far as early 1950s. Due to its close proximity to the Indian markets, Sarpang has been the commercial center for the central dzongkhags.

Favourable terrain and climatic conditions combined with fertile agriculture land offer tremendous opportunity for farm mechanization and commercial horticultural development.

Sarpang is divided into 12 gewogs:

1. Bhur Gewog : Bhur geog is one of the geogs that is near to the highway and is also located near Gelephu town. It comprises of 5 villages with 156 households. The total area of the geog is about 55.4 Sq. Km. The forest coverage in the geog is about 89% of the total geog geographical area.
Rice is the main cash crop grown in the geog . The geog has one RNRRC sub-center, one Regional DSC center and 18.5 Km of irrigation channel to facilitate paddy cultivation.
The school going children from the geog attend school at Gelephu Primary and High School.

2. Chuzagang Gewog : Chuzagang geog comprises of nine villages with 420 households. The geog has an area of 57.6 Sq. Km. the forest coverage in the geog is about 80% of the total geog geographical area.
The geog has one RNR centre, eight kilometers of access road, 18.65 km of irrigation channel, one BHU, one malaria center, one RWSS and a community school located in the geog.

3. Dekiling Gewog : Dekiling comprises of 16 villages with 466 households. The total area of geog is about 115 Sq. Km with a total arable land of 2486 acres. Only about 8.7% of the arable land is under cultivation at present. The forest coverage of the geog is about 88% of the totle geographical area.
The geog has cool winter months and hot and humid summer months with heavy precipitation specially during the month of July, Auguse and September.
There is one BHU center that provides health services to the people. There are 7 water supply scheme and 10 sanitation facilities under water and sanitation sector. There are 2 community schools located at Dekiling and jigmeling village.

4. Doban Gewog : Doban is the remotest geog of the dzongkhag. It comprises of 21 villages with 425 households. The total area of the geog is about 251 Sq. Km. total arable land of the geog is about 1731 acres. The forest coverage of the geog is about 80%of the total geog graphical area.
There are four RWS schemes and seven sanitation facilities in the geog.

5. Gelephu Gewog : Gelephu geog is the main center for marketing where people from both within and outside the dzongkhag come every year to do business. It comprises of five villages with 319 households. The geog has a total area of 53.6 Sq. Km and total arable land is about 2619 acre the forest coverage of the geog is about 80% of the total geog graphical area. The geog has one Regional Veterinary Lab, one AEC and 18.7 Km of irrigation channel to facilitate agricultural development in the geog. With respect to Health and Education , immunization coverage is almost 100% carried out from Gelephu Hospital. There are one RWS scheme and 21 sanitation facilities in the geog. There are one High School and two primary School located at Gelephu and Pelrithang Village

6. Hilley Gewog : Hilley geog is one of the biggest geogs of the Dzongkhag in term of area and it comprises of 10 villages with 307 households. The forest coverage of the geog is about 80% of the total geographical area of the geog. The geog has about 292 acres of wetland, 987.6 acres of dry land and 586 acres of tsheri land.
The geog has following service centers and facilities: five RWS schemes, 6 sanitation facilities, one High School, One Primary School, one Auction yard, 12.5 Km of irrigation channel and four Suspension bridges.

7. Jigmechhoeling Gewog : Jigmechhoeling gewog is the biggest gewog of the dzongkhag. It comprises of 26 villages with 513 households. The total area of the gewog is 471.5 Sq. Km and total arable land is about 1927 acres only. The forest coverage in the gewog is about 90% of the total area. Around 80% of the villages are located in the remote areas.
Farmers in the gewog grow orange and cardamom as the main source of cash income. These two cash crops occupy about 191 acres of arable land. The main field crops grown are paddy, maize, millet and other minor cereals like finger millet, foxtail and little amount of buckwheat. The present annual production of cereals in the gewog is about 964.678 metric tones.

8. Sarpangtar Gewog : Sarpangtar geog comprises of 9 villages with 233 households. The total area of the geog is about 22 Sq. Km and total arable land is about 1215 acres. The forest coverage account to about 38% of the total geographical area of the geog. Orange is the most important cash crop in the geog and it occupies about 31 acers of the arable land.
There are 7 RWSS schemes and 10 sanitation facilities. In the education sector, the geog has one high school and one primary schoollocated at Sarpangtar village.

9. Senghe Gewog : Senghe geog comprises of 11 villages with 124 households. The total area of the geog is 215 Sq. km and the total arable land is 969 acres. The forest coverage accounts to about 80% of the total geog geographical area. The major crops grown in the geog are maize, millet, mustard, and orange in agro-climatically suitable areas.
There are 2 RWS schemes and 2 sanitation facilities at present in the geog most of the farmers in the village use natural spring water sources for domestic purposes round the year.

10. Serzhong Gewog : Serzhong comprises of 7 villages with 297 households. The total area of geog is about 42.4 Sq. km and total arable land is 1207 acres. The forest coverage accounts to an approximately 80% of the total geog graphical area. The main cash crop grown in the geog are paddy, maize, millet, mustard and orange.
In general, every individual household owns cattle. Health services are extended from the BHU located at Norbuling and 3 ORCs located within geog. There are 7 RWS schemes and 12 sanitation facilities presently in geog. For the education service, there is one junior high school and one community school.

11. Taklai Gewog : Taklai gewog is one of the remotest gewogs of the dzongkhag. It comprises of 11 villages with only 62 households. The total area of the gewog is 339 Sq. Km and the total arable land is 3245 acres. The forest coverage in the gewog is about 85% of the total gewogrophical area.
The farmers of the gewog mainly grow traditional crops like paddy, maize, millet, mustard and orange. About 25 acers of orange plantation are found in this gewog.
With respect to health and education, facilities are non-existent. Most of the farmers in the villages use natural spring water sources for domestic purposes round the year. The children attend school at Umling primary School and Norbuling JHS, which is quite far from the gewog. Thus, accessibility to safe drinking water facilities and establishment of local community school would be a great help to the farmers.

12. Umling Gewog : Umling geog comprises of 5 villages with 287 households. The total area of the geog is 122 Sq. km and the total arable land is about 1308 acres. The forest coverage accounts to about 82% of the total geog graphical area.
The farmers in the geog grow areca nut as the main cash crop. Other field crops grown by the farmers include Paddy, Maize, Barley, Millet and Buckwheat.
There is one community primary school and BHU, where people have easy accessibility to health and education.
