16-year old girl stabbed on October 25 in Thimphu

Thimphu police are on the look-out for a 22-year old Indian construction worker, who allegedly stabbed a 16-year old girl on October 25 in Thimphu.

Sarita Darjey, a baby-sitter from Sibsoo, Samtse, was stepping out of her employer’s house to buy vegetables when she met the construction worker at the doorstep.

“He asked her if she would marry him and when she refused, he dragged her to the attic with his hand clamped around her mouth and stabbed her, said Leela Maya Darjey, the victim’s cousin and an attendant in the hospital.

“He had told her that if she did not marry him, then no one could, she said. The incident happened at around 6:30 pm in the Hongkong market vicinity.

Sarita was stabbed four times on her chest and back after which the man ran away. Mani Kumar Darjey, a relative of the victim, was in the house, tutoring students when the incident happened.

“We heard hurried footsteps running down the stairs but thought it might be children playing outside, said Mani Kumar Darjey. “But later, when the children were about to leave, we found our door had been latched from outside.

Shortly, a woman living in the attic opened the door and informed Mani Kumar of what had happened.

In an almost unconscious state, Sarita had crawled four or five steps down from the attic towards the neighbour’s door and knocked on it. “When I saw her, she was sweating, drowsy and there was blood all over, said Mani Kumar.

“The police were informed and at around 7 pm she was rushed to hospital, he said. “She was taken to the operation theatre twice, since a wound on her back went unnoticed in the first surgery.

According to the victim’s relatives, Sarita had a photo of the construction worker. The victim told them that the man had asked her to be his adopted sister about a week before the incident.

At present, the patient is recuperating at the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital in Thimphu. When Kuensel last visited the patient, she was unable to speak.

Doctors at the hospital refused to comment on the matter.
