The Prime Minister conveyed His Majesty’s wish to have a “simple, warm and intimate occasion, designed for the Bhutanese people in all 20 dzongkhags.”He said that His Majesty had commanded that the celebrations must be “founded on Bhutan’s unique image as a country of people with immense solidarity and pride in our nation; following a philosophy of Gross National Happiness embodied in farsighted policies and development priorities; treading an unprecedented path to democracy in a time of peace and prosperity, and poised on the cusp of a bright economic future fuelled by a large population of youth with great motivation and promise.”His Majesty had commanded that “Bhutan’s future is that of a nation that respects its unique values and traditions but whose people also embrace the values of Innovation, Creativity and Enterprise. A nation with sustained growth and success, able to fulfill the aspirations of our people. We must desire this for Bhutan, not only for the celebrations in 2008, but for all time to come.”His Majesty had commanded that, “the Coronation must, therefore, transcend the formal ceremony of the Crowning of the King and should instead symbolize the People’s unified first step in to the bright future of a strong and prosperous democratic Bhutan.”The Prime Minister said that the government and people must take inspiration from the wisdom of His Majesty Jigme Khesar. He also said that the government’s construction works and improvement of roads and other activities were mostly part of the 9th plan projects. “These are all geared to the long term needs of the country and are part of planned activities,” he said. He said that the government would work towards fulfilling His Majesty’s desire that Coronation Celebrations remain simple and they be scheduled and organized in a such a manner that all 20 dzongkhags could not only participate but also benefit economically from the special events in 2008. I visited the western part of Bhutan in April 2008
just for just a few days and left my heart there. Prestine natural beauty and people with warm hearts and truly happy minds is an awesome combination. Where else can we find a monarchy that is deeply revered by all for their wisdom and compassion ? Indeed, I am very fortunate to have visited the last Shangri-la ![]()
