Lunana – Bhutanese remotest village

Lunana is one of the remotest gewogs in the country. Standing at an altitude of over 4000 meters the gewog remains virtually cut off from the rest of country for about six months by snow. To connect the place to the rest of the kingdom, the Bhutan Telecom installed a satellite telephone station in May last year but it is yet to be commissioned. Telecom officials said a mountain in front of the earth station is obstructing the signal. They said the earth station has to be taken to a higher altitude. This will however involve additional costs and the construction of new infrastructure. Telecom officials are also exploring other alternatives. Source: BBS
