On the October 19, BBS TV ran the story of Ugyen Tshering, an orphan who was then under the care of the women and child protection unit of the Royal Bhutan Police. Ugyen Tshering has now found a home.

Ugyen Tshering’s father, a taxi driver, died in a vehicle accident in Phuntsholing. His mother who was an alcoholic also passed away. In the news report, Ugyen Tshering told BBS that he has a younger sister but today he does not know where she is.

Ugyen Tshering came to Thimphu four years ago. He says he requested the driver of the bus to drop him at the bus terminal. With no one to look after him, Ugyen says he started begging to make a living.

At the BBS, we hoped that airing the report would have an impact. We had quoted the officer in charge of the Women and Child Protection Unit, Lt. Karma Rigzin saying that the unit would try to find a foster home for Ugyen.
