Pursuing higher studies is a major problem for children of Dorokha Dunkhag in Samtse

With no middle and higher secondary schools in Dorokha Dungkhag, pursuing higher studies is a major problem for children of Dorokha Dunkhag in Samtse.

Dorokha Dungkhag is one of the remotest places in Samtse Dzongkhag. It is located two days walking distance from Samtse.

There are three community schools and a lower secondary school in Dorokha Dungkhag. Every year hundreds of students pass out from the three community schools.

Our Samtse correspondent Tshitrium Gyeltshen reports the only lower secondary school, Dorokha lower secondary is under immense pressure every year. The existing infrastructure at the school cannot accommodate the increasing number of students.

The school’s principal told BBS that with the number of students increasing every year, teacher shortage has emerged as another problem.

The school currently has 800 students and 15 teachers. The classrooms and hostel are congested with several students sharing the available rooms.

But the problem doesn’t end here. After completion of class seven from Dorokha lower secondary school, students have to travel to other Dzongkhags to pursue middle secondary schooling. This has become an expensive affair for the parents.

There are plans to upgrade the Dorokha lower secondary school in the 10th five year plan. Both students and parents are looking forward to it but in the meanwhile they are coping with the problems as best as they can. Source: BBS
