Bhutanese old and priceless paintings are to be conserved

old and priceless paintingsThe murals of the Gom Kora Lhakhang in Trashiyangtse have worn-out with age. But thanks to the Cultural Properties Division of the Home and Cultural Affairs Ministry, they will not be lost for ever.

Two conservators from the Division for Cultural Properties are helping to restore and conserve the paintings.

So far they have finished conserving 30 percent of the painting. It is a painstaking job. First, the mural paintings are washed using a solvent known as thinner t remove the dirt which may have accumulated over many years. Where necessary, they stitch the cloth on which the murals have been painted and redo the paintings.

Tashi Lhendup, one of the conservators, said their efforts will help preserve the paintings and prevent it from further deterioration.

While such works are of utmost importance in preserving the country’s age old properties, Tashi Lhendup said that the work is challenging. He said they face difficulties since they are not well trained in conservation.

The month long restoration works started on November 24. It will resume after the Gom Kora Tshechu is over.  Source: BBS
