Coronation and Centenary celebrations, a group of Bhutanese artistes will celebrate in Bangkok, Thailand

While the talk of the town is about who’ll perform what and where during the Coronation and Centenary celebrations, a group of Bhutanese artistes will travel to Bangkok to liven up the celebrations in Thailand. On invitation by the Bhutanese embassy in Thailand, the Thimphu-based Tashi Nencha group will perform for three days, starting November 6 at the Thai Pavilion in Bangkok.

A spokesperson for Tashi Nencha said that the first day of the performance was scheduled for only VIPs of the Thai government and Her Royal Highness, princess Chulabhorn, will be the chief guest; the following days will be for the public in Bangkok.

The group will perform national and regional traditional songs and dances, which the troupe has been preparing for months.

“One group will leave for Thailand on November 4 and the others will remain in Thimphu to perform for the Coronation here,” said Tashi Norbu, proprietor of Tashi Nencha.

Tashi Nencha, which had been silent for quite some time after the death of the founder, the late Aku Tongme, has been researching, collecting costumes and practising all the regional dances to present in their original form, according to Tashi Norbu.

“We have now every costume and material that we need to perform regional music and dances,” said Tashi Norbu.

Tashi Nencha, the first entertainment company, was set up in 1987 to preserve the country’s traditional music and dances. The company was also a recipient of the art and culture award from *****uoka, Japan, in 2005.
