Dzongs in Bhutan to be insured

The Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs will be putting up a proposal to the Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan to insure all the dzongs (fortress) in the kingdom. The proposal will also include the insurance for the nangtens inside the dzong.

The Deputy Secretary Karchung Tshering said the initiative will help preserve the age-old artifacts and safeguard the kingdom’s cultural property. He said before putting up the proposal, the ministry will collect the data of all the dzongs. He said initiatives have been taken to protect the dzongs and the nangtens.

Dzongs have been provided with fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, fire vehicles and fire-proof iron trunks. People working in the dzongs have also been trained to use the firefighting equipment.

Karchung Tshering said the ministry has issued a circular to strengthen the fire security system in the dzongs and to install new security features like smoke detectors in all the dzongs in the 10th Five-Year Plan.
