Gasa Dzong on Fire

Gasa DzongGasa Dzong caught fire on 22nd January. The fire started in the dzong at about 8.30pm and the people in the area were soon fighting the blaze that threatened to consume the dzong. The absence of effective fire fighting facilities was a problem, according to Gasa residents who had to bring water from about 100 metres from the dzong.

The Gasa dzongda said that the wooden structures of the dzong were burnt but it was difficult to assess the actual damage to the dzong and its treasures. He said that people from the hot springs at the bottom of the valley had rushed up to help fight the fire.

People around the country were following developments in Gasa late into the night.
