Namgay Penjor
The National Council members have elected Namgay Penjor as their chairperson and Dasho Karma Ura as the Vice Chairperson. They were elected through a secret ballot today.
Namgay Penjor secured 13 out of the 25 votes cast. Dasho Karma Ura got 10 votes. Five members contested the election.
Following the election, the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson took the oath or affirmation of secrecy.
The National Council has 25 members, 20 elected by the people and five appointed by His Majesty the King.
Prior to election, the members took their oath or affirmation of office. It was administered by the Chief Justice Lyonpo Sonam Tobgay.
Namgay Penjor has been elected as a National Council member from Punakha Dzongkhag.
Dasho Karma Ura
According to the Draft Constitution, the National Council shall act as the house of review on matters affecting the security and sovereignty of the country and the interests of the nation and the people that need to be brought to the notice of the Druk Gyalpo, the Prime Minister and the National Assembly.
