Thimphu welcomes Tara-thon runners

Tara-thon runners arrives in the capitalCompleting the 600 kilometer marathon run from Trashigang to Thimphu, the 10 students and two lecturers of Sherubtse College arrived in the capital, yesterday.

Gracing the flag in programme at the clock tower square was the President of the Tarayana Foundation, Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. Also present was Her Royal Highness Ashi Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, senior government officials and representatives from other organizations.

The team embarked on the marathon run on December 21. Along the way they stopped to raise money through donations and contributions for the Tarayana Foundation’s Endowment Fund.
The money they have helped raise will be used to support students from disadvantaged families.

Nadya Ladouceur, one of the lecturers, said the students willingly undertook the marathon run to raise money for a good cause. Their spirit of volunteerism is appreciable she said.

The student members said they are proud to have taken part in the run.

Speaking to BBS the students said the people, right from those living in rural areas to business community members in town, have contributed generously.

The Tara-thon team members were able to raise more than Nu. 618,000 which they handed over to the Tarayana Foundation upon reaching in Thimphu. Source: BBS
