The charm of the Yangphel archery this year is that there is no peace of mind even if an archer has hit the highest number of kareys so far in the league.
This is because the tournament this year has a top 20 contest and, with the league round in full swing, the names of the top 20 are changing almost on a daily basis. The top 20 is judged by the numbers of kareys, sa-kareys, and karey on the bull’s eye. As of yesterday, Tshewang Dorji of Joya Chundu is number one on the top list. He had hit 34 kareys, two sa-kareys and 11 on the bull’s eye in three rounds. If the list stays this way until the league round is completed, Tshewang Dorji would drive home a Maruti A-star car.
But it will be a long wait before he can claim the car. Several teams have not even played their second round. Pema Namgay of Pelden Group is second, followed by teammate Tshering Gyeltshen. Opposition leader, Tshering Tobgay is 16th with 23 kareys, 2 sa-kareys and six on the bull’s eye.
Yangphel officials said that the top 20 competition would give archers an opportunity who has talent but cannot reach the knockout rounds for other reasons. “Every individul archer will get a chance to show their best in three league rounds and a chance to win prizes,†said an official.
However, spectators at Changlimithang said that there is a huge difference in the prizes for the best archer, best archer runners up and the third position. “The difference between an A Star and Nu 40,000 (second best archer prize) and Nu 10,000 (third prize) is huge, while only one or two kareys will separate them,†said a spectator.
Yangphel officials justified the differences in the prize saying that the best should take the best prize. Source: Kuenselonline
