Every year several new houses are constructed in Thimphu. But it has not been able to live up with the growing population leading to a housing crunch.
Population in urban areas in Bhutan sees an annual increase of around seven percent every year.
With the current population growth and the rural urban migration, Thimphu alone requires additional 600 new dwellings every year just to keep up with the population growth.
To address the housing crunch, the Thimphu city corporation has proposed a project under which, around 3,000 buildings will be constructed.
The buildings will accommodate over 80,000 people. However the question of affordability is totally another issue. Source: BBS
