Yeedzin FC were crowned the 10th national A division league champions after an emphatic 5-0 victory over Druk Star, in which they humbled the second spot aspirant. As champions, they will represent Bhutan in the AFC president’s cup next year.
Yeedzin went into the final game of the league as champions, with the maximum points of 34 from 12 games. The champions have never lost in the league and drew once.
Yeedzin didn’t relax at the thought that they would be champions even if they lost to Druk Star, and went hammer and tongs at their opponents from the start. Druk Star with 22 points could have sealed the second spot if they had beaten the champions. But their little hopes were shattered in the first half itself, as Yeedzin banged in three goals before the break. The second half was only slightly better, as Yeedzin scored two more to make it 5-0.
Yeedzin’s striker Kinga was the man of the match, as he notched up a hat trick in the final game.
“We’re very happy with the victory and we feel really good. Last year we were close to winning but, since some of our strikers were transferred to some other clubs, we couldn’t,” said the manager Jigme. “The team spirit and the coordination were always there and I think this made the difference,” he said.
The final games kicked off with Druk Pol and Transport United FC competing for second and third places. Druk Pol steamrolled over Transport Utd in the first half and sank them with three goals. Transport Utd, in the previous games, came back several times to beat their opponents, scared Druk Pol when they scored two goals in quick succession. But Druk Pol didn’t let it happen yesterday and took the game away from Druk Star with a late goal to finish the contest 4-2.
The champions were awarded the trophy and Nu 250,000 by the opposition leader, Tshering Tobgay, who was the chief guest at the finals. Druk Pol received Nu 80,000 and Transport United FC Nu 50,000 as the third best.
